We're on a "family vacation"-- my sister, mom, her boyfriend & me. We're driving around New England in the giant brown rusty van. They've put a platform with a foam-rubber mattress on top so we can sleep in the back and store all our stuff underneath. We sleep overnight in parking lots (usually in hospitals) or in the woods. Once, in Maine, awakened by the sound of dirt bikes whizzing past the van, we take a walk through the woods and break into a rusty trailer. Everette steals all the cast iron cooking ware and the pot bellied stove. They say it's OK because the trailer looked abandoned.

Our trip ends in Hartford, CT, we decide its gonna be a big deal--we're staying in a motel! We get to take showers! Of course, Mom and Everette spend the whole time arguing, while Allie and I sit out in the hall of the Holiday Inn in our white flowered nightgowns. I was reading The Mists of Avalon. All the middle aged couples strolling the brown-carpeted halls in their slippers to get ice gave us sympathetic looks.
